Lightwell Crack Repairs

Render cracks filled by hand on rope in a lightwell that would be slow to scaffold and would block the light to the windows facing into it.

Project context

Building described without naming the client. Rope access chosen because the lightwell could not be scaffolded without blocking light to the windows.

IRATA technician suspended in the lightwell with a mortar bucket on the harness, alongside the cast-iron downpipe

Challenge

Cracks ran across the cream-painted render of an internal lightwell, around a large cast-iron downpipe fitted with anti-pigeon spikes. A lightwell is one of the hardest places to scaffold: slow to build, and it blocks the light to the windows facing into it.

What was carried out

Our IRATA technician worked the drop on rope instead, carrying mortar in a bucket clipped to the harness and loading the trowel at the defect. The cracks were filled by hand, working around the cast-iron downpipe and its spikes.

Outcome

The cracks were filled with the courtyard below left clear throughout, and no scaffold, tower or ground-level obstruction was needed.
